Hugh Hefner, Playboy ready for their next chapters (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? On the second floor of the Playboy Mansion, beyond the seemingly endless hallway lined with photos of the famous folks who have visited the legendary party playground, is a narrow staircase that leads to a small loft.

"LOCK DOOR," signed "Hef," reads a handmade note tacked to the loft's tiny entrance.

"Excuse me if I sit?" asks Hugh Hefner, ever the gentleman as he leads a reporter into the cramped room that has only one chair. "I've got a bad hip."

Here in this modest space is where Hefner keeps a detailed record of his life that spans more than 2,500 volumes and counting ? a Guinness world record for a personal scrapbook collection.

Every Saturday, the 85-year-old founder of Playboy magazine spends a few hours scrapbooking ? a hobby he began in 1943 with cartoons he drew of himself and his high-school classmates.

Those doodles were "probably just a way of creating a world of my own to share with my friends," Hefner says, seated amid the archives of his life in yes, his trademark silk pajamas and bathrobe. "And in retrospect, in thinking about it, it's not a whole lot different than creating the magazine."

As the new year begins and Playboy approaches its 60th birthday, Hefner intends to continue working on the magazine, his scrapbooks and a Hollywood movie about his life. "That's alive again," he says of the biopic idea that's been bandied about for decades.

Though 2011 wasn't entirely kind to the man or the brand ? Hefner's 24-year-old fianc?e called off their engagement days before their June wedding and NBC's "The Playboy Club" was the first fall TV casualty, canceled after just three episodes ? Hefner is optimistic about what's next, personally and professionally.

"Retirement is unthinkable to me," he says. "The future is bright and very exciting and I'm looking forward to playing a part in it."

Hef ? his preferred nickname since his teens_ has been a media force since he published the first issue of Playboy in 1953 and he remains the figurehead of the empire he created. Although Playboy Enterprises named Scott Flanders its chief executive in 2009, Hefner continues to serve as editor-in-chief of the magazine, choosing the cover models and centerfolds and editing the cartoons, letters and party jokes.

Even Hefner is at a loss to explain the enduring appeal of Playboy, which has spawned and outlasted so many imitators, but he speculates that it "has to do with the quality of the publication and the fact that we were saying things that were important then and now."

The current issue, which features the much-touted nude pictorial of Lindsay Lohan, includes articles about Occupy Wall Street and Pakistani nuclear scientist A.Q. Khan, along with an excerpt from Elmore Leonard's latest novel and, of course, those photo spreads.

It's impossible to separate Hefner from the notion of busty young beauties and the whole clothing-optional, life's-a-party, I-work-in-pajamas thing. But such an image belies a thoughtful man who deeply values his contributions to "the social-sexual changes of my time," yet whose orderly persona seems tame compared to the celebrities of today's tabloid scene.

A longtime supporter of the First Amendment, Hefner was an early advocate of civil rights and reproductive rights, and he's championed personal liberties in print.

"It's very clear that Playboy was instrumental in the sexual revolution," he says. "We were making a case for the irrational sexual values that we had back then, and making a case for the sexual revolution back in the years immediately before it became a reality, and doing it in a forum that was very influential."

In the 1960s, he says, everybody read Playboy. The magazine was at its peak, selling nearly seven million copies a month, and its cutting-edge content of new writers and nude photos ? and Hefner's own editorials against puritanical repression ? appealed to a college-age audience hungry for change.

Hefner was opening the Playboy Club in London in 1966 when he realized the sexual revolution was well under way.

"The miniskirt had just arrived, sex was in the air and gaming, gambling had just become legal in the clubs," he recalls. "I had been writing the Playboy Philosophy for a couple years, and I felt that week in London that I was looking at the future."

That's when Hefner took his practice of the Playboy lifestyle to a new level. He opened more and more Playboy clubs, launched a TV show in Los Angeles and bought a private jet, dubbed the Big Bunny, to shuttle him back and forth from Playboy's headquarters in Chicago to the West Coast. He bought five and a half acres in the posh Holmby Hills neighborhood next to Beverly Hills and, as he puts it, "jumped into the swimming pool."

He was slowed by a stroke in 1985 as well as the conservative values that dominated during the Reagan era. Hefner married his 1989 Playmate of the Year, Kimberly Conrad, in July of that year. Son Marston was born a year later and Cooper was born in 1991. Hefner and Conrad separated in 1998 but remained married until their sons turned 18. They divorced in 2010.

Cooper Hefner is now a 20-year-old junior studying film and history at Chapman University in suburban Orange, Calif., and he says he hopes to be part of an effort to restore Playboy's appeal to young people.

"I definitely think there is some rebranding that needs to be done," Cooper Hefner says on a tour of the "game house," a little cottage a short walk from the mansion that's home to a pool table and an array of arcade games. "I personally don't think, with my generation and people of my age, the brand is as cool as it was in the `60s and `70s."

Indeed, Playboy's print circulation is now down to 1.5 million and its readership skews older than in its heyday.

Although not a major moneymaker, Hugh Hefner insists the magazine remains "the heart and soul of the company."

Still, the real future of Playboy ? which Hefner took private in 2011 after 40 years of public ownership ? is in brand licensing for merchandise and clubs, says CEO Flanders, noting that the one billion dollars-plus the licensing generates annually dwarfs the company's media profits.

Cooper Hefner agrees updated Playboy Clubs can play a big part in wooing a more youthful following, but he believes cinema projects such as Playboy's new short-film contest and his father's big-screen biopic can also help lure a younger demographic.

The elder Hefner has always loved the movies, calling them "my other family." Movies helped solidify his ideas about the painful result of sexual repression. What he saw on screen echoed the "hurtful and hypocritical side" of puritanical values that he experienced in his own life.

"I saw the censorship in the movies when the production code came in in 1934 when I was still a kid, and saw the fact that in movies, even sophisticated couples, like in `The Thin Man,' Nick and Nora Charles slept in twin beds," Hefner says. "In other words, married people in movies slept in twin beds, and I related that as a kid to the fact that I didn't get a lot of hugs and kisses in my home."

Hefner still screens movies at the mansion three times a week: Classics on Fridays and Saturdays and new films on Sundays. Every year on his April 9 birthday, he runs his favorite film, "Casablanca," and guests dress in the fashions of the 1940s.

The original playboy isn't bashful about wanting to see his own colorful life on the big screen. Previous attempts at screenplays of his story read "as if they were doing a piece on someone who's already gone," Hefner says, offering a rare acknowledgement of his own mortality. "But you've got the guy here. There isn't a great mystery. I can point where the bodies are and how to do it."

Besides working on a new script for the biopic, Hefner is working on new relationships with 25-year-old Playboy models Shera Bechard and Anna Berglund. He describes himself as "essentially a very romantic person."

"I don't know that I would be best served at married (life)," he says. "But I do know that I need an ongoing romantic relationship."

He also needs to keep working on Playboy, conceding that perhaps the business he built has become the soul mate he's sought throughout his life.

"It most certainly is the other half of who I am, without question, and it does fulfill me in ways that most work wouldn't for other people," he says.

It has provided him with the kind of larger-than-life existence reflected in the photos that fill the hallway near his scrapbooking room.

"It's kind of like in `Casablanca,' Rick's Caf?. Everybody comes to Rick's. Well everybody comes to Hef's," he says, passing by the pictures. "You'll find them from Mick Jagger to Doris Day to Groucho Marx, young and old."

Hefner says he was always a dreamer, but his life is beyond anything he ever imagined.

"Most people's lives, if they are successful, have a peak and then it's a bell-shaped curve, or they have wonderful years and then a slow dissipation. The opposite has been the case here," Hefner notes almost shyly. "I'm the luckiest guy, from my perspective, the luckiest guy on the planet."

"If you can do that and make some real difference in the world, it's too sweet."

If Canada is Google's sweetheart, why is access still a problem?

Google GOOG-Q marked its 10th year in Canada by nearly doubling the size of its staff here and the Mountain View, Calif.-based company intends to make its Canadian presence even larger in 2012.

?Canada is one of the fastest growing markets for Google and it?s one of our big bets corporately. It?s a market that Google is very committed to and investing in heavily in terms of resources and growing very, very quickly,? said Eric Morris, head of mobile advertising at Google Canada.

More related to this story

Mr. Morris was one of the first two Google employees to set up shop in Canada after the company first moved north in 2001. When asked if Google might double its Canadian staff again in 2012, from its current roster of about 300 employees, he said ?hopefully.?

?We hope to continue that robust pace well into 2012. We?re going to continue to expand our business here and continue to hire and continue to invest in Canada.?

The company currently has four Canadian offices, in Toronto, Waterloo, Ont., Montreal and Ottawa, and the employees there work on some of Google?s top projects.

?Some of the smartest, smartest talent we have corporately comes out of Waterloo and some other places in Canada,? said Mr. Morris.

?They?ve contributed to Gmail, some of our mobile apps, to commerce, to making the Internet safer and faster with things like Chrome and knocking out malware ? so lots and lots of technological innovation has come from Canada.?

Mr. Morris said Google?s growing presence in Canada has a lot to do with the strong digital culture here and the way it?s grown over the last decade.

In 2002, the company projected that 70 per cent of Canada?s population would be online by 2017 ? we?re already past 80 per cent.

?If you think back to when Google first opened its office in Canada the Internet was a growing medium, but it was much, much smaller,? he said.

?It was kind of mass media at the time, but today virtually everybody is online.?

He admits it?s tough to explain to his fellow Canadians why we?re still not among the first to get access to some Google features, noting Google Voice in particular is ?the toughest one.?

?Yeah, I think that?s frustrating. I?m a lover of tech and even because I work here I don?t always get access to everything that I read about,? Mr. Morris said.

?It?s something we?re working on. These are complicated products ? when we can we launch globally ? but there are some nuances to products, whether it?s language issues or policy-related issues, that make global launches more challenging.?

Canadians also do not yet have access to Google Wallet, which allows users to make payments in stores with a smartphone. In general, Canadian businesses are a bit behind when it comes to adopting e-commerce, which Google sees as an opportunity, Morris said.

?We think it?s going to happen here and it?s increasing each year. And as a result, that?s a place Google wants to invest in to try and accelerate that process,? he said.

Earlier this year, Google started a program called Get Your Business Online to help Canadian small businesses establish a web presence and embrace the web.

?Canada is certainly ripe for that kind of technological innovation ... so we hope to see it take off here soon.?

NBA Analyst Greg Anthony Breaks Down the New Season, Chris Paul Trade and Future of the Lakers

The NBA experienced one of the most intriguing off-seasons in the history of the league. A lockout threatened the entire season and?David Stern vetoed a trade that would have sent Chris Paul to the L.A. Lakers. With many fans upset and others losing interest, the NBA must?find ways to rejuvenate its core fan base. However, there are still several interesting story lines that will be closely monitored this season.

Greg Anthony of Turner Sports has covered the NBA extensively as an analyst for nearly a decade. Anthony recently spoke with rolling out about the new NBA season, the controversial Chris Paul trade and the L.A. Lakers? outlook. ?amir shaw

With NBA lockout causing training camp and summer practices to be canceled, which teams will have an advantage during the season?

The veteran teams are always going to have an advantage. A lot of the veteran teams will have guys that went through the last lockout. ?And some young teams that have their entire nucleus together will have an opportunity ? teams such as Memphis and Oklahoma City. But the time off will effect everybody. It?s going to be interesting to see how it all materializes.

A lot of fans saw the NBA lockout as a matter of the players versus the owners. But how much did poorly managed teams play a role in the disagreements?

You hit it on the head. Ultimately, all of this comes down to management. The teams that understand that this is a business don?t allow their emotions to get into what direction they?re going to go in. They make moves based on what?s going to be within the best interest of the franchise today and tomorrow. There are teams that are paying three head coaches at the same time, or they make the trade for a guy and they?re stuck with a bad contract. The smart teams do the best job. And the ones that are poorly ran don?t win.

What are your thoughts on the vetoed trade that would have sent Chris Paul to the Lakers?

It makes the league look like the bad guys, but the bottom line is that the NBA has every right to nix a deal because New Orleans is their team. People are looking at it like David Stern is throwing down the gauntlet and dictating what teams can and can?t do. The difference is David Stern owns the team. If he didn?t own the team, I think it would be more of a legitimate reason to have an uproar.

How will the Lakers be able to bounce back while dealing with a new coach, the vetoed trade for Chris Paul, and no Lamar Odom?

Kobe Bryant was upset with the Lamar Odom trade. Not only did he get traded, but he was traded to the Lakers? arch rival that just won the world championship. The Lakers didn?t get better and they helped the Mavs get better after they lost Tyson Chandler. But Kobe Bryant?s job is to play. He?s obviously the franchise player and I would be upset with the deal as well. The Lakers definitely created a situation where they don?t have a lot of harmony. Especially when you have a coach in his first year and when you?re coming off a very disappointing post-season last season. There?s still a lot?of thought as to what direction the team is going to go.

Packers beat Bears 35-21, clinch No. 1 seed (AP)

GREEN BAY, Wis. ? With the first five-touchdown game of his NFL career, Aaron Rodgers ensured that the Green Bay Packers' playoff road will go through Lambeau Field.

He also made sure the rival Chicago Bears will be spending the playoffs at home.

Rodgers broke a close game wide open by leading three quick scoring drives in the second half, and the Packers beat the Bears 35-21 on Sunday night.

Rodgers noted that he once threw six touchdowns in junior college ? also in a rivalry game ? but acknowledged this one was a little bit bigger.

"Yeah, this one's pretty special," Rodgers said.

With the win, the Packers (14-1) nailed down the No. 1 seed in the NFC and claimed another round of bragging rights in the NFL's most storied rivalry by knocking the Bears out of the playoff chase.

"We wanted the path to go through Lambeau," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said.

Rodgers threw a pair of touchdown passes to Jordy Nelson, another two to James Jones, and found tight end Jermichael Finley for a score. Rodgers was 21 of 29 for 283 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions when backup Matt Flynn took over for Rodgers with 7:54 left in the game.

Rodgers surpassed Lynn Dickey's single-season franchise record of 4,458 yards passing with one game left, although it's unclear how much Rodgers will play in the Packers' finale against Detroit.

The loss eliminated the Bears (7-8) from playoff contention and put the Atlanta Falcons in the playoffs.

Third-string running back Kahlil Bell rushed for 121 yards for the Bears, who trailed by only four early in the third quarter. But Rodgers drove the Packers for touchdowns on their next three possessions to put the game out of reach.

"When you play the Super Bowl champions, you have to be on top of your game," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "Offensively, we did enough things to keep us in the game and have a chance to win the game at the end. But defensively we just didn't have it."

McCarthy said the team's run defense will be examined after the big performance by Bell, but added that the final score told the story.

"We won big," McCarthy said. "That's the bottom line."

Chicago came into Sunday on a four-game losing streak and beset by injuries. But the Bears were able to stay in the game with solid defense and tough running by Bell, who started because of injuries to Matt Forte and Marion Barber.

Rodgers' second-half fireworks proved to be too much for Chicago.

"Thirty-five points on that defense, that's a good night," McCarthy said.

The victory was the Packers' fourth over the Bears in 2011. Green Bay also beat Chicago in the 2010 regular-season finale, the NFC Championship game, and at Soldier Field on Sept. 25.

With the Bears trailing 14-3 at halftime, quarterback Josh McCown found Earl Bennett wide open for a 49-yard gain to set up first-and-goal on the 1. Bell fumbled just short of the goal line on the next play but offensive lineman Edwin Williams recovered the ball for a touchdown.

With the Packers nursing a four-point lead, and the Lambeau Field crowd nervously quiet early in the third quarter, Rodgers answered by dropping deep and throwing a rainbow pass to Nelson, who blew through the Chicago secondary and hauled in the ball for a 55-yard touchdown.

Rodgers then showed his running ability on the Packers' next possession, juking his way between Bears linebackers Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs on a scramble. Rodgers finished the drive with a 7-yard touchdown toss to Jones, giving the Packers a commanding 28-10 lead.

Packers safety Charlie Peprah came up with an interception, and Rodgers found Nelson for another score to give Green Bay a 35-10 lead.

"It just hasn't gone the way we wanted to," Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said. "If we play like this, that's what's going to happen. The last five weeks, we haven't played well enough to win, and we've lost all five games. We're not real happy where we're at. Our coaches aren't happy, but that's what we get."

McCown finally answered with a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kellen Davis ? then drew the ire of the Lambeau crowd by scrambling for a two-point conversion and spiking the ball over the goalpost with his team trailing 35-18.

Rodgers' offensive feats came behind a patchwork offensive line, as the Packers were without three of their top four tackles.

Chad Clifton returned to practice this week after sitting out since October because of hamstring and back injuries, but isn't ready to play. Bryan Bulaga was inactive Sunday because of a left knee sprain, and backup Derek Sherrod is out for the season with a broken right leg.

Green Bay also was missing wide receiver Greg Jennings, because of a sprained left knee, and defensive lineman Ryan Pickett because of a concussion.

The Bears have lost five straight games since losing quarterback Jay Cutler to a broken right thumb in a Nov. 20 victory over San Diego. Chicago was 7-3 after that win, but came into Sunday's game barely alive in the playoff chase.

The Bears started McCown on Sunday after backup Caleb Hanie struggled to fill in for Cutler. McCown's most recent start came with the Oakland Raiders in 2007, and he was out of the NFL last season.

"It's a tough assignment, but you've got to find a way to pull it off," McCown said.

To make matters worse for the Bears' offense, Barber was inactive because of a calf injury. Chicago already was without Forte, who missed his third straight game because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Notes: Sunday's attendance was 70,574, the team's 300th consecutive sellout, including the playoffs. ... Bears offensive lineman Lance Louis left the game in the first half because of an illness. ... Packers RB James Starks bruised an ankle.

Mena Golf Tour's top three invited to compete in Asian Tour Qualifying School

Dubai: In a ringing endorsement of the Mena Golf Tour, which ended here in October, the top three participants have been invited to compete in the final stages of the Asian Tour Qualifying School.

Presented by the Sports Authority of Thailand, the final stage will be held from January 18 to 21 at the Springfield Royal Country Club and Imperial Lakeview, where the top-40 and ties will earn playing rights for the 2012 Asian Tour season.

?

Our tour has the potential to launch the careers of regional and international stars and with time it will contribute to enhancing the overall development of golf in the region. That's the ultimate aim

?

MENA Golf Tour chairman Mohammad Juma Bu Amim

Jake Shepherd, Peter Richardson and Sean McNamara, who finished among the top three on the Order of Merit earlier this year, will receive exemptions into the final stage in recognition of their performance on the four-event MENA Golf Tour, which boasted a combined prize fund of $225,000.

Emerging talent

Article continues below

The three professionals, who have also been handed special invitations to play in the 2012 Omega Dubai Desert Classic in February, are excited at the prospects of competing alongside some of the world's best emerging talent in the final stage.

"It will be an honour to play on the Asian Tour and we are grateful to them for the first-stage exemption," said Shepherd, who topped the MENA Golf Tour Order of Merit with total earnings of $17,749 from three of the four events he played on the tour.

"Playing on the MENA Golf Tour has opened up a wide [range of] opportunities which we never dreamed of. The exposure to the final stage competition will also help us fine-tune our game ahead of the European Tour event in Dubai."

The Qualifying School will also enable upcoming players the opportunity to compete on the Asian Development Tour that has grown to eight tournaments since its inception in 2010.

Excitement

Mohammad Juma Bu Amim, chairman of the MENA Golf Tour, thanked the Asia Tour for their gesture, saying it would add more excitement to the tour and reflect the bond the two tours share.

"Our tour events are open to both professionals and amateurs and, therefore, have a unique appeal. Money is one thing. They offer an opportunity to play golf at the highest level (the Omega Dubai Desert Classic) and now this first stage exemption on the Asian Tour Q-School is an added bonus," he said.

"The players won't be short on incentives when they tee it up in the second edition of the MENA Golf Tour, which we are planning to launch some time in March or April next year.

"Our tour has the potential to launch the careers of regional and international stars and with time it will contribute to enhancing the overall development of golf in the region. That's the ultimate aim."

Epiphany festival draws crowds to Florida

TARPON SPRINGS, Florida (AP) ? In a spectacle repeated every Jan. 6 for more than a century, dozens of teenage boys set out from the stately Greek Orthodox cathedral in this Florida Gulf Coast town to seek God's blessing in the chilly waters of a bayou several blocks away.

They dive off row boats and, in a chaotic flailing of arms and legs, grope in the murky water for a wooden cross tossed in by a priest. The one lucky enough to surface with it earns instant celebrity status, a ride through the streets on the shoulders of his peers and ? the Greek-American boys believe ? the favor of God in the coming year.

The Tarpon Springs "Cross Dive" is the centerpiece of what locals call the largest Epiphany event in the Western Hemisphere, celebrating the day Orthodox Christians believe Jesus was baptized in the River Jordan. Equal parts religious ceremony and community jubilee, it is the signature festival for the waterfront village that draws tourists year-round to its working sponge docks and colorful assortment of Greek restaurants and shops.

Tarpon Springs, 45 minutes northwest of Tampa, boasts one of the largest per-capita concentrations of Greek-Americans in the country among its modest population of 22,000. (About 8,000 in town claim such status.) And the Mediterranean influence is everywhere, from the dome of the grand St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral downtown to the intricate murals on the walls outside the shops that line Dodecanese Boulevard across the street from the sponge docks.

The city's population will at least double for the cross dive and Greek festival that follows on Jan. 6. Sixty boys will dive in Spring Bayou this year, with the cross likely thrown by Archbishop Demetrios Trakatellis, leader of the Greek Orthodox Church in America. The boys are 16, 17 and 18 years old, and participation is limited to members of the handful of Greek Orthodox churches in the Tampa Bay area.

"We actually receive requests from all around the country from youths who want to participate," says Nick Mantzanas, this year's Epiphany committee chairman, who dove for the cross himself as a teen two decades ago, as did his father before him.

Tarpon Springs, incorporated in 1887, began life as getaway for rich people from the North. Sponges eventually were discovered in the area, and by the 1890s sponge-packing houses were going up on the docks. The sponge business eventually shifted its center from Key West, Cuba and the Bahamas to Tarpon Springs, and by the turn of the century the city was considered the largest sponge port in the United States.

According to the city's official history, a man named John Corcoris arrived in Tarpon Springs in 1896 as a sponge buyer from New York. He was hired to make the industry more efficient, introducing the first mechanized sponge fishing boat and bringing in 500 Greek divers from Kalymnos, Halki, Sumi, Hydra, Spetses, Aegina and other Greek islands. More Greek immigrants followed to establish restaurants, candy shops, coffee houses and grocery stores to serve the sponge-fishing community.

Blights of the sponge beds in the 1930s and '40s, along with the introduction of synthetic sponges, took the oomph out of the industry here, but the community has fiercely maintained its culture and Greek heritage. Tourism is now the area's leading industry, but professional sponge divers still ply the waters off the coast of Tarpon Springs, as deep as 150 feet (45 meters), for sponges that are sold in the dockside shops and all over the world via the Internet.

A short walk from the sponge docks is an historic, active downtown popular with tourists and antique hunters. Besides eating and shopping at the sponge docks, visitors can board sight-seeing or charter fishing boats for a few hours out on the Gulf of Mexico.

A unique attraction here is the venerated painting known as "The Weeping Icon of St. Nicholas" in the Greek Orthodox cathedral. Kept under glass in an elaborately carved enclosure, the image inexplicably "wept" at Christmastime for three consecutive years in the early 1970s. The droplets that appeared were never explained, and at the time the Greek Archdiocese in New York termed it a "phenomenon beyond human comprehension." St. Nicholas is the patron saint of the area's sponge fishing community, as well as the cathedral.

The business and culture of Tarpon Springs revolves around the Epiphany festival and getting ready for the next one.

"It brings people to Tarpon Springs who might not normally come here or even thought of coming here," says Sue Thomas, president of the local chamber of commerce. "They see the downtown, they go to the sponge docks. We hear it over and over. We love it."

Ontario town has 'holiday' tree: Mayor

INNISFIL, Ont. ? While the mayor of this Ontario town will be celebrating Christmas, she says the tree up in Town Hall is a holiday tree.

?We work in a secular environment ? religion doesn't enter into a government building. We wanted to make it an inclusive celebration for everybody," Mayor Barb Baguley said.

?I don't have a problem wishing people a Merry Christmas, and I have my own personal celebration of Christmas, but in the government office, I have a profound respect for all cultures in our community. So we're calling it a holiday tree.?

The donated tree has decorations from local school children.

Elmer Spring, of Spring Tree Farms, donated the tree and said he can't understand why they'd ask him to donate a Christmas tree and then call it something else.

?I find it kind of pathetic that they'd say to people, 'Come see our holiday tree,'? said Spring. ?We gave them a Christmas tree, they asked the kids to decorate it like a Christmas tree. That's what it is.?

94% Hugo

"Hugo" is magic; the kind of tender, heartfelt magic that just doesn't inhabit any modern films these days. It's one of the most pure and cleansing cinematic experiences in memory. Though it is unlike anything the master has helmed before... it's pure Scorsese.Though "Hugo" has been billed and advertised as a children's film, it's deliberate pace and meticulous craft and attention to detail will appeal to older viewers. It's rich visuals and stunning cinematography and art direction will astound. Children might enjoy the adventure and the great young leads, but most of the themes and plot will go over their heads. They definitely will love the 3D, but so will adults. It's the best use of the format since "Avatar," and in ways surpasses that film with straight ambition. This was a very personal film for Scorsese and it shows in nearly every frame. It's a film of two parts; the studied seclusion of the title character Hugo, and later an homage to the earliest moments in cinema, subtlety advocating the importance of film preservation. Those are all things that Scorsese knows much about. We see why he was the perfect fit for this material. But when a film revolves almost entirely around a youth character, casting can be a make or break situation. This calls for actors well beyond their years. Asa Butterfield (The Boy in the Striped Pajamas) is not only stellar and believable; he give one of the most impressive and expressive child performances ever. The emotion he is able to convey (without dialogue even) is staggering. Also brilliant is Ben Kingsley who is sure to nab a wealth of nominations at years end. Chloe Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen, Christopher Lee, Helen McCrory, and Emily Mortimer (along with many others) round out a strong and layered ensemble. As mentioned above, the film deals with film preservation. One of the film's greatest, most unforgettable treats is the recreation of early landmark moments in cinema... specifically the films of Georges Melies (who is played by Kingsley in the film). These sequences are charming and frankly incredible feats. They are also in 3D which in itself is one of the great uses of the format.Like any Scorsese picture, his unrivaled directorial prowless is the real star of the show. As expected, he continues to innovate, leave his comfort zone, and redefine himself as a filmmaker. It's safe to say no other film looks and feels like this. It's safe to say there is no greater living filmmaker. This film deserves your attention. This is a brilliant piece of entertainment and filmmaking that bleeds passion and ranks with Scorsese's best. I'm not saying that lightly, but I will say this; if you're willing to skip "Hugo," be prepared to skip one of this decade's finest features.

They're back: Filipino stewardesses dance again (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? Who says plane travel can't be fun?

Flight attendants for a low-cost Philippine airline who gained fame by dancing through safety demonstrations are back swaying through the aisles.

They've swapped the Lady Gaga tunes that made them popular last year for Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You."

Manila-based Cebu Pacific airline says the choreographed dance helps passengers pay more attention to the safety demonstration.

Said spokeswoman Candice Iyog on Thursday, "Now that it's Christmas, we wanted to bring a little more fun into the flight."

Iyog told The Associated Press that reaction has been good.

Video of the routine shows four attendants in orange shirts and khaki shorts dancing away on select flights.

China's Stake in a Stable North Korea (Time.com)

The death of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il on Dec. 17 is expected to cause concern within China, its massive neighbor and only major ally. While Kim was known to be frail, particularly after a 2008 stroke, his condition had appeared to stabilize and Chinese leaders were under the impression that he "was in better health than was the case," says Stephanie Kleine-Ahlbrandt, Northeast Asia project director for the International Crisis Group says. "His death is very unexpected, and they will be understandably alarmed."

Of particular concern to China is whether Kim's death will make North Korea, long a source of instability in the region, even more unpredictable. "No one should say the possibility will be high for North Korea to implode, but no one can neglect the potential risk of that sort of domestic tension and unrest," says Zhu Feng, an international-relations scholar at Peking University. The transition to the deceased dictator's appointed heir, third son Kim Jong Un, also comes in a year when China is expected to carry out its own, long-planned change of top leaders, adding to the concerns in Beijing. "The Chinese have always prioritized stability and particularly at this moment want nothing to interfere with their own preparations for leadership transition," says Kleine-Ahlbrandt. (See photos of Pyongyang residents mourning the dear leader.)

The pressure stems from China's unique relationship with North Korea. It is the North's largest provider of food aid, a key trading partner and a weapons supplier for its military. China also maintains a rigorous control of its border with the North, sending back defectors. It considers them "economic migrants," and to help stem the flow it has tried to push Pyongyang to adopt economic reforms of the sort that helped China grow into the world's second largest economy. (Kim Jong Il always remained wary of the threats to his authority that could arise from a market economy, however, and backed away from any significant reform.)

The help isn't limited to the domestic sphere. By hosting the long-running six-party talks on North Korean denuclearization, Beijing even facilitates North Korea's dealings with other nations. That's a job it will have to focus on intensely during the North Korean leadership transition. "Beijing has a key role to play because it has the best channels politically and militarily with Pyongyang," says John Delury, an assistant professor at Yonsei University's Graduate School of International Studies in South Korea. "There's a lot of weight on their shoulders because, for the time being, they are the new North Korean leadership's door to outside world." (Read "Inside Kim Jong Il's Eerie Authoritarian World.")

The relationship between North Korea and China was forged in the 1950-53 Korean War, when the two young nations, back by Soviet aid, battled U.S.-led U.N. forces to a bloody stalemate. The legacy of that conflict remains an important part of their ties. In October 2010 Xi Jinping, the leading candidate to succeed Chinese President Hu Jintao in the leadership transition that begins next year, called the war, which killed an estimated 4 million people, "a great and just war for safeguarding peace and resisting aggression." That contravened the widely held understanding, backed up by documents in Soviet archives, that the war was started by North Korean forces. That same month last year Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited a memorial in North Korea for Mao Anying, a son of Mao Zedong who died while fighting as a volunteer in the conflict, which is officially known in China as the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea.

In North Korea itself, the war has never been officially ended but is merely considered to be at a cease-fire. That keeps Pyongyang in a perpetual state of military readiness. It has relentlessly pursued a nuclear capability (testing devices in 2006 and '09), maintains one of the world's largest standing armies, and guides official decisionmaking under a policy of songun (military first). The demilitarized zone between North and South Korea is also, despite its name, the most fortified border in the world, with territorial conflict an ever present danger. In March 2010, a South Korean navy corvette was sunk by a torpedo in disputed waters, killing 46 sailors in an attack that Seoul blamed on the North. In November 2010, North Korea shelled a South Korean island, killing two South Korean soldiers. (Read "Kim Jong Il's Life: Myth, Mystery and Mayhem.")

The provocations put pressure on Beijing to reprimand its ally, but while Chinese officials made calls for peace on the Korean peninsula in both cases, they stopped short of publicly condemning Pyongyang. The traditional bonds with the North, and the desire to maintain a buffer state between China and U.S.-fortified South Korea, mean that Beijing is unlikely to break with Pyongyang. "The North Korea issue has always been controversial for China," says Zhu. "We see a totalitarian regime that causes trouble for China with its nuclear ambitions and its provocative behavior, but based on proximity and traditional and historical links Beijing can't abandon the North. There's no single policy divide in China greater than North Korea."

On Monday, the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party, the country's top ruling body, sent condolences to its North Korean counterpart, saying Kim "gave his life's energy to the great cause of establishing a rich and powerful, Korean-style socialist nation." Beijing also endorsed the Pyongyang's succession plans, saying it hoped that North Korea "under the leadership of Comrade Kim Jong Un, will turn grief into strength and build a powerful socialist country."

Public sentiment in Beijing has been less effusive, however. On Monday at the North Korean embassy, where the flag flies at half-mast, a handful of people could be seen weeping and walking briskly out of a side entrance, and a nearby North Korean -- run restaurant was closed in mourning. Few people noticed or cared. Instead, the citizens of North Korea's only real ally seemed far more interested in the deals at the next door Walmart.

Rapid rise in wildfires in large parts of Canada? Ecologists find threshold values for natural wildfires

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? Large forest regions in Canada are apparently about to experience rapid change. Based on models, scientists can now show that there are threshold values for wildfires just like there are for epidemics. Large areas of Canada are apparently approaching this threshold value and may in future exceed it due to climate change.

As a result both the area burnt down annually and the average size of the fires would increase, write the researchers of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and the University of Michigan in the December issue of the journal The American Naturalist. The strategies for combating wildfires in large parts of Canada should therefore be reconsidered.

According to media reports, after weeks of drought around 1,000 hectares of forest and scrubland were burnt down in the West Canadian province British Columbia in the summer of 2009 alone. 11,000 people had to be evacuated. Are such events on the rise as a result of climate change? This question is being hotly debated by ecologists all over the world. In July a group of US researchers led by Anthony Westerling of the University of California forecasted similar changes in the journal PNAS. They believe that climate change might result in a dramatic increase in the threat of wildfires in Yellowstone National Park and that the forests might disappear here in the 21st century.

Fires are an important factor in many terrestrial ecosystems. They are a result of the interaction of the weather, vegetation and land use, which makes them very sensitive to global change. "Changes in the wildfire regime have a significant impact on a local and global scale and therefore on the climate as well. It is therefore important to understand how the mechanisms which shape these wildfires work in order to be able to make predictions on what will change in future," explains PD Dr. Volker Grimm of the UFZ.

For their model, the scientists evaluated data from the Canadian Forest Service, which had recorded fires greater than 200 hectares between 1959 and 1999, and sorted these by ecozone. This showed that three of these ecozones in Canada are close to a turning point: the Hudson Plains south of the Hudson Bay, the Boreale Plains in the Mid-West the Boreale Shield, which stretches from the Mid-West to the East coast and is therefore the largest ecozone in Canada. The closest to a turning point is apparently the Boreale Shield. In order to check their model and the theory of a threshold value for wildfires, the scientists looked at the fires in this region more closely. Around 1980 the average size of the fires in this part of the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba tripled rapidly. "In our opinion this is a sign that there are also threshold values for forests above which the wildfire regime drastically changes," reports Volker Grimm. "It is likely that the Boreale Plains have in recent decades, particularly around 1980, experienced a change to a system characterised by wildfires. This has fundamental repercussions for the environment and the combating of wildfires. Small changes in the fire propagation parameters have a great impact on the size of the fires." Gradual changes, such as those which can be expected due to climate change, can therefore result in an abrupt and sharp increase in the size of the fires.

The scientists were also interested in the parallels with disease propagation. Prevention strategies, which reduce combustible material, are in a way similar to the vaccinations which are used against the spread of diseases such as the measles. Here too there is a threshold value above which a disease spreads and below which it falls. Other modellers from the UFZ were therefore able to turn this theoretical threshold value into a practical value. With foxes it was shown that only 60 per cent had to be vaccinated against rabies in order to successfully combat the disease. The scientists therefore hope to find out more in future studies which cover both disciplines.

HBT: Phils re-sign Rollins for 3 years

UPDATE: Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com hears that the two sides agreed to a three-year deal worth about $33 million with a vesting option for a fourth year.

1:39 PM: Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Phillies and Jimmy Rollins have agreed to a three-year contract with a vesting option for a fourth year. Exact terms aren?t yet available, but word from Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com is that the option is easily attainable.

Rollins was aiming for a five-year deal this winter, which seemed unrealistic in the first place, but he lost nearly all of his leverage after Alex Gonzalez signed with the Brewers and Rafael Furcal returned to the Cardinals. There were some rumors this earlier week that Rollins? agent was talking to a mystery team, but most assumed he would return to Philadelphia.

Rollins, who turned 33 in November, batted .268/338/.399 with 16 homers, 63 RBI, 30 stolen bases and a .736 OPS over 631 plate appearances this past season. Assuming he stays healthy, he could have a chance to pass Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt as the team?s all-time leader in hits.

Arabs may take Syria peace plan to United Nations (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? Arab states may ask the U.N. Security Council to endorse their peace plan aimed at ending a Syrian crackdown on protests against President Bashar al-Assad, Qatar's foreign minister said after talks with Arab League ministers on Saturday.

Expressing frustration that Syria had not implemented the plan, six weeks after it was first agreed, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani said the window for an Arab solution to the crisis was closing.

"If this matter is not solved in the weeks ahead, or couple of months, it will no longer be in Arab control," Sheikh Hamad told journalists after an Arab ministerial committee meeting in Qatar. "That is what we told the Syrians from the beginning."

Syria has conditionally approved a plan to send monitors to oversee implementation of the November 2 Arab League initiative, which calls on Assad to withdraw the army from urban areas, release political prisoners and hold talks with opponents.

But Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby said Damascus was objecting to the League's call for protection of Syrian civilians, saying members of the security forces were also being killed in the turmoil.

For a graphic http://link.reuters.com/dup55s

The United Nations says Assad's crackdown on the protests, inspired by uprisings across the Arab world this year, has killed more than 5,000 people. Authorities blame gunmen for the violence and say 1,100 soldiers and police have been killed.

The Arab League suspended Syria and declared economic sanctions against Damascus over its failure to implement the initiative. The United States, European Union and neighboring Turkey have also imposed sanctions.

Long-time Syrian ally Russia took a step closer to the Western position on Thursday when it presented a surprise draft resolution at the United Nations which stepped up its criticism of the bloodshed in Syria.

Sheikh Hamad said that, in response to Moscow's move, the Arab League would meet on Wednesday to decide whether "to ask the Security Council to adopt the Arab initiative and Arab resolutions instead of resolutions from other states."

"We are not talking about military action but we will ask the Security Council to adopt the Arab initiative," he added.

Any referral of the Arab plan to the United Nations would be likely to anger Damascus, which has accused unnamed Arab countries of trying to set the stage for foreign intervention.

The unrest is the most serious challenge to the 11-year rule of Assad, 46, whose family is from the minority Alawite sect and has ruled majority Sunni Muslim Syria since 1970.

An armed insurgency has begun to eclipse civilian protests, raising fears Syria could descend into civil war.

Two days ago army deserters killed 27 soldiers and security personnel in the southern province of Deraa, an activist group said. On Friday, activists said security forces shot dead at least 19 people during protests by hundreds of thousands.

IRAQI MISSION

Shi'ite-led Iraq, which opposed the Arab League sanctions on its neighbour and fears that unrest in Syria will spill across the frontier and upset its own delicate sectarian balance, sent a delegation to Damascus on Saturday.

Assad met the Iraqi delegation that included National Security Adviser Faleh al-Fayad and "affirmed that Syria dealt positively with all proposals submitted to it," the official news agency SANA report.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's media adviser Ali al-Moussawi said the delegation would meet government officials and representatives of the Syrian opposition in Syria. "And we ready to meet members of the opposition outside Syria," he said.

The main exile opposition Syrian National Council was meeting in Tunisia on the first anniversary of the self-immolation of a jobless Tunisian graduate Mohamed Bouazizi, the incident that set off a wave of revolts around the Arab world.

Syrian protesters have expressed growing frustration that the Arab League, which surprised many when it suspended Syria and subsequently announced sanctions against Damascus, has since then extended the deadline for Syrian compliance several times.

Hundreds of thousands demonstrated on Friday, according to the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, under the slogan of "The Arab League is killing us."

The British-based Observatory said 19 people were killed by security forces on Friday, but the state news agency SANA said there were no fatalities, despite what it said were several attacks by "armed terrorist groups" against security forces.

It also reported that security forces defused several explosives in Damascus and Hama provinces on Friday.

(AP) ? It's almost winter, but get ready for some surf and sun: The Beach Boys are reuniting.

The founding members of the classic rock group ? Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine ? announced Friday they are getting back together to celebrate their 50th anniversary. They're working on a new album and also plan a 50-date tour that will take them around the world.

"This anniversary is special to me because I miss the boys, and it will be a thrill for me to make a new record and be on stage with them again," Wilson said in a statement.

The group also includes Bruce Johnston and David Marks, both of whom have been with the band for decades.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers gave birth to the California rock sound. Back then, the band members were Love, Jardine, Wilson and his two brothers ? Carl and Dennis Wilson, who have since died. With songs like "Good Vibrations," ''I Get Around" and "California Girls," the quintet embodied the fantasy of West Coast beach life. Their albums, particularly "Pet Sounds," influenced rockers of their generation and beyond.

But Wilson suffered mental problems that caused him to withdraw from the band, and there were years of animosity between Love and Wilson, who are cousins, as well as lawsuits among members of the band. Still, they have gotten back together over the years, including for their 40th anniversary in the last decade.

Love remarked in the statement Friday on how he and Wilson were getting along well, sharing compliments together in the studio.

"Music has been the unifying and harmonizing fact of life in our family since childhood," he said.?"It has been a huge blessing that we have been able to share with the world." Referring to a Beach Boy hit, he added: "Wouldn't It Be Nice to Do It Again??Absolutely!"

The group was supposed to announce their reunion as a surprise during the Recording Academy's live nominations special for the Grammys last month, but those plans fell through.

However, Jardine said the group planned to appear at the Feb. 12 Grammy telecast in Los Angeles.

"There will be a surprise at the Grammys," he told Rolling Stone. "We will do something really exciting. There's a lot of interest in it, which is nice. It's going to be a very big operation."

The Beach Boys first concert is scheduled for April 27 at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
