Unsuspecting family-owned businesses could be hit by exorbitant estate taxes in 2013 if Congress doesn?t act, the National Restaurant Association and other business organizations told U.S. senators.

The NRA joined other members of the Family Business Estate Tax Coalition in a letter to U.S. Senate leaders to reiterate the restaurant industry?s full support for repeal of the estate tax ?and in the interim, to urge Congress to maintain the current estate tax policy, which exempts estates of under $5 million and sets a maximum rate of 35 percent.

If Congress doesn?t act, the current policy will sunset at the end of this year. If this happens, ?the progress made on the estate tax will be undone by returning to the pre-2001 level of a $1 million exemption and a 55 percent rate,? according to the?coalition letter.

China tests more powerful rocket engine

XI'AN, China, July 30 (UPI) -- China says it has successfully tested a new engine for a more powerful rocket that will pave the way for building a space station and even lunar exploration.

The engine, producing 120-tons of thrust burning liquid oxygen and kerosene, was tested Sunday in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province, China Daily reported.

The test was to determine how the engine would respond to rotational speeds of nearly 20,000 rpm and temperatures of 5,400 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 3 minutes.

The engine is intended to power the Long March 5 carrier rocket -- set for a first launch in 2014 -- to lift a 25-ton payload into near-Earth orbit or put a 14-ton payload into a higher geostationary orbit, experts said.

Current Long March carrier rockets only have a 75-ton thrust, Tan Yonghua, head of Xi'an Aerospace Propulsion Institute, said.

The new engine's extra thrust will enable China to assemble a space station and also be used as part of a lunar exploration program, institute officials said.

Congo's president accuses Rwanda of supporting rebels hostile to government

Democratic Republic of Congo?s president Joseph Kabila has accused neighbouring Rwanda of backing rebels opposed to his government, saying it was an ?open secret? that Kigali was meddling in Congo?s affairs.

Rwanda is under increasing pressure after a UN experts? report found it was providing support to the M23 rebels who have fought government soldiers in North Kivu province since April, displacing some 470,000 civilians. Kigali has rejected the allegations and accused the report?s authors of failing to consult Rwandan authorities.

?As for the involvement of Rwanda ... It?s an open secret ... There is a report that effectively establishes the presence ... from this country to the M23 and to other armed groups,? said President Kabila. ? (Reuters)

If you need a loan, according to Fair Isaac and Company (the creators of the FICO credit scoring system), do your rate shopping within a focused period of time, such as 30 days. FICO scores distinguish between a search for a single loan and a search for many new credit lines, in part by the length of time over which inquiries occur. They go on to say that looking for new credit can equate with higher risk, but most credit scores are not affected by multiple inquiries from auto or mortgage lenders within a short period of time.

If you are tempted to use the credit cards you just paid off, cut them up or lock them away in a safety deposit box. But, save two major credit cards (American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Discover) and use them SPARINGLY. Keep balances at 30% of your credit limit or lower and pay your bills on time. Closing revolving accounts you have paid can hurt your credit scores by raising your debt-to-income ratio and making your credit history look younger than it actually is. Keep the credit accounts open, but just do not use the credit cards. A refinance or second mortgage for debt consolidation is available as a fixed mortgage rate loan or an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM). Check with your lender to see which is best for you.

Like it or not, our roots have taken hold, and although its not what I had originally envisioned, I must admit that we have a very lovely life here.

Yet my family back in Massachusetts has had a very hard time comprehending the permanence of our situation. They still cajole us to come back to the East Coast. They still poke and prod when I mention looking for a new house in a nearby California community. (You know what kind of house you could buy here in Massachusetts with that money?! Yes Dad, I do know. Sigh.) And, now that Lucas has come along, theres a heightened sensitivity that wasnt there before. Suddenly, going six months between visits feels like a lifetime ? because for a baby, it pretty much is.

Rewind to about a year ago: Im in the car on the way to pick up my parents from the airport. Lucas is just six months old, but his little personality is already forming. Hes sensitive to strangers, but warms up for familiar faces, especially those of his Papa Cano and his Abuelita. He coos and giggles in the back seat while I attempt to prep him for my parents arrival.

Unfortunately, both the Web app and iPad app are underwhelming.

Cozi Setup
Cozi's concept is to centralize important aspects of day-to-day family life. The Cozi iPad app works as a standalone service, though most people will likely prefer to set up their accounts via the Web app to explore the full range of features and tools. It is possible to set up entirely via the iPad app, though. The most crucial part of setting up is to create an entry for each member of the family, which can include pets, nannies, and extended family members. Everyone entered into the Cozi system is assigned a color (which you can change) so that any activity associated with that person becomes color-coded.

When you add an email address to any user's account, it gives the person a username with which to log in. So Uncle Artie gets a login because he has an email address, but the goldfish doesn't.

Cozi takes a few key aspects of personal organization, like keeping a calendar and to-do list, and simply makes them synced and shared across every family member's account. Everyone in your family who has a Cozi login will see the same calendar, shopping list, to-do list, and so forth, when they open Cozi.

Cozi iPad Features
The iPad app opens with a simple interface, with a rail of buttons on the left and a photo placeholder where you can upload a picture of your family to personalize the experience on the right. The main navigation comprises Calendar, To Do, Shopping, Journal, and Settings, which is a pared-down version of the Cozi Web app.

In fact, the iPad app omits more than I think it should. What's missing here that you get in the full Cozi online are messages, an email system, recipes, and recipe planning. From the iPad app, you can pull up and edit a little more information, like family members' email addresses and phone numbers, but those fields are confusingly tucked away under settings. I'd rather see a "People" or "Family Members" button included with the other main buttons.

Other family organizers simply give you more tools that are better designed for the complex needs of an entire household?although it's worth noting that none runs the full gamut. Even the ones we rate highly don't combine all the features available in competing products. For example, PCMag's Editors' Choice in this category, Famjama (beta), is the best I've seen and does at an excellent job of centralizing important family information, but even it doesn't have financial tools. Another Web app called Doxo, on the other hand, specifically handles finances and bill payment, but skips many other areas of family management.. Cozi's sweet spot is in lists and calendars, a lackluster niche to have?especially on an iPad?seeing as better digital calendars and list-making apps already exist.

Not So Cozy Security
Cozi comes in two versions: a free account that contains advertisements and some feature limitations and a paid Gold account ($4.99 per month or $49.99 per year), which removes both. One account works for the whole family, which sounds appealing except that all users login with the same password. Cozi recognizes different user names, in the form of each family member's email address, but one password is reused for everyone. A child could easily log in to the family account using his parent's email address. It's a security nightmare waiting to happen.

Shopping lists and to-do lists work as advertised, but lack solid management tools. I'd like to see Cozi add more control over which family members have read-only capabilities and who can actually edit and change a list. For example, if a mother created a shopping list and asked her spouse to buy all the items, she wouldn't want her bratty teenage son to quietly add the list things he wants? at least not without showing the items as "pending approval."

A bonus feature in the Cozi Web app that's absent from the mobile app (rather unfortunately?I think it's a missed opportunity) is recipe suggestions. If you find a recipe you like, you can automatically add all the ingredients to your grocery shopping list in the Web app. Wouldn't you want that same functionality on an iPad?

Family Organization on the Go
The Cozi Web app is a family management center with some decent shared calendar and list-making functions, but ultimately is not a website we recommend using, and thus, we cannot recommend the Cozi iPad app either. Our Editors' Choice for family organizers, Famjama (which is technically still in beta), is a much better option with tighter security features and overall better tools for keeping your family running smoothly. While Famjama does not have a dedicated iPad app, it does have a mobile-optimized site you can access from a Web browser.

Aussie chief urges team to focus amid racism row

The head of Australia's team at the London Olympics has urged his athletes to maintain their focus and not become sidetracked by the racism row involving John Steffensen.

The 400 metre runner has claimed he was racially abused by an Australia Olympic Committee staff member in Beijing four years ago, an allegation supported by Australia athletics team captain and reigning Olympic pole vault champion Steve Hooker.

"I won't single John out," Australia's chef de mission Nick Green said Tuesday. "For athletes this week, they need to focus and be ready to compete. Their focus needs to be on the competition.

"Any other distraction can have adverse affects on their performance. Athletes need to focus, but saying that, I have an open-door policy to all athletes, and if an athlete wants to talk to me about a matter they've got an issue with then, absolutely, come and see me.

"It happened in 2008. I'm looking after the team of 2012.

"I'm aware of it, like we all are. But I'm not giving more attention to it, no," Green insisted.

Earlier this month Steffensen, who has had several run-ins with Australia athletics chiefs, was overlooked for an individual 400m spot that went instead to Sydney teenager Steve Solomon.

Afterwards, Steffensen told Australia's Channel Nine: "I've put up with being racially vilified by this federation, being discriminated against on many teams.

"You know it'd help if I was a different colour, then a lot of decisions with my federation would be totally different, but I've never brought that up, I've always kept quiet on that."

Steffensen, however, has been selected as a member of Australia 4x400m relay squad.

Meanwhile, Green stressed Steffensen was not 'destabilising' the team.

"From a larger team point of view, no he's not. Having spoken to the team itself, the athletics team, he is a member of the team.

"We know he's a character, he's allowed to be a character and he's allowed to voice his opinion.

"The matter of him as a member of the team, that hasn't changed, some allegation he's made in 2008 and Athletics Australia will deal with those."

Asked if he would intervene in the Steffensen situation, Green replied: "When it becomes out of control."

Previously, Hooker supported Steffensen's claims by saying: "The staff member that was involved in that incident in Beijing isn't on this team.

"So as far as this team goes I don't believe John has any issues with anyone on this team."

He too urged Steffensen to put the issue on the back-burner, at least for the duration of the Games.

"That is stuff from the past and unfortunately John is still carrying that around with him and still has an issue with it," Hooker said.

"But we all hope as a team and we hope for John that we can get past that for the sake of this next two weeks and if there is stuff that still needs to be resolved at a later date then it can happen then."

(TSE: 4503) today announced that a Phase 3 trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of the addition of Tarceva^? (erlotinib) tablets to Nexavar^? (sorafenib) tablets did not improve overall survival for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) vs. Nexavar alone. The SEARCH (Sorafenib and Erlotinib, a rAndomized tRial protoCol for the treatment of patients with Hepatocellular carcinoma) trial compared Nexavar in combination with Tarceva to Nexavar alone. The safety and tolerability of the treatment combination were generally as expected based upon experience and use of the two products alone and there were no new or unexpected toxicities or changes to the respective product safety profiles observed. Data from this study will be presented at an upcoming scientific meeting. Nexavar is jointly developed by Bayer and Onyx. Tarceva is jointly marketed by Astellas and Genentech, a member of the Roche Group.

"The data from SEARCH showed that the addition of Tarceva to Nexavar did not provide additional benefit to patients with unresectable HCC," said Dr. Dimitris Voliotis, Vice President, Global Clinical Development Oncology, Bayer HealthCare. "The results of this trial confirm the efficacy and safety profile of Nexavar in the treatment of unresectable liver cancer."

About the Phase 3 Study

The SEARCH trial was an international multicenter placebo-controlled Phase 3 study that randomized 720 patients with advanced liver cancer. The study examined whether the addition of Tarceva to Nexavar prolongs survival as compared to Nexavar alone in patients with unresectable HCC. The primary endpoint of the study was overall survival (OS) and the secondary endpoints were safety, time to radiographic progression (TTP), disease control rate (DCR) and patient-reported outcome. ?Patients were randomized to receive either 400 mg of Nexavar twice daily and 150 mg of Tarceva once daily or 400 mg of Nexavar twice daily with matching placebo.?

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common form of liver cancer and is responsible for approximately 90 percent of the primary liver cancers in adults.[1][2]? Liver cancer is the seventh most common cancer in the world and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally.[3][4]

About Nexavar (sorafenib) Tablets

Nexavar is approved in the U.S. for the treatment of patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma and for the treatment of patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma. Nexavar is thought to inhibit both the tumor cell and tumor vasculature. In preclinical studies, Nexavar has been shown to inhibit multiple kinases thought to be involved in both cell proliferation (growth) and angiogenesis (blood supply) ? two important processes that enable cancer growth. These kinases include Raf kinase, VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2, VEGFR-3, PDGFR-B, KIT, FLT-3 and RET.

Important Safety Considerations For Nexavar (sorafenib)

Nexavar may cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. Women of childbearing potential are advised to avoid becoming pregnant and female patients should also be advised against breastfeeding while receiving Nexavar.

Cardiac ischemia and/or myocardial infarction may occur. Temporary or permanent discontinuation of Nexavar should be considered in patients who develop cardiac ischemia and/or myocardial infarction.

Gastrointestinal perforation was an uncommon adverse reaction and has been reported in less than 1% of patients taking Nexavar.

Uncommon but serious adverse reactions, including keratoacanthomas/squamous cell cancer of the skin and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, have been reported in clinical trials.

An increased risk of bleeding may occur following Nexavar administration. If bleeding necessitates medical intervention, consider discontinuation of Nexavar.

Hypertension may occur early in the course of treatment.? Monitor blood pressure weekly during the first 6 weeks and periodically thereafter and treat, as required.

Hand-foot skin reaction and rash are common and management may include topical therapies for symptomatic relief. In cases of any severe or persistent adverse reactions, temporary treatment interruption, dose modification, or permanent discontinuation of Nexavar should be considered. Temporary interruption of Nexavar therapy is recommended in patients undergoing major surgical procedures.

Nexavar can prolong the QT/QTc interval and increase the risk for ventricular arrhythmias. ?Avoid use in patients with congenital long QT syndrome and monitor patients with congestive heart failure, bradyarrhythmias, drugs known to prolong the QT interval, and electrolyte abnormalities.

Elevations in serum lipase and reductions in serum phosphate of unknown etiology have been associated with Nexavar.? Monitor patients taking concomitant warfarin regularly for changes in prothrombin time, INR, or clinical bleeding episodes.? Avoid concomitant use of strong CYP3A4 inducers, when possible, because inducers can decrease the systemic exposure of sorafenib.? Nexavar exposure decreases when co-administered with oral neomycin.? Effects of other antibiotics on Nexavar pharmacokinetics have not been studied.

Most common adverse reactions reported for Nexavar-treated patients vs placebo-treated patients in unresectable HCC, respectively, were: diarrhea (55% vs 25%), fatigue (46% vs 45%), abdominal pain (31% vs 26%), weight loss (30% vs 10%), anorexia (29% vs 18%), nausea (24% vs 20%), and hand-foot skin reaction (21% vs 3%). Grade 3/4 adverse reactions were 45% vs 32%.

Most common adverse reactions reported for Nexavar-treated patients vs placebo-treated patients in advanced RCC, respectively, were: diarrhea (43% vs 13%), rash/desquamation (40% vs 16%), fatigue (37% vs 28%), hand-foot skin reaction (30% vs 7%), alopecia (27% vs 3%),and nausea (23% vs 19%). Grade 3/4 adverse reactions were 38% vs 28%.

During post approval use of Nexavar, the following adverse drug reactions have been identified: angioedema and drug-induced hepatitis, including reports of hepatic failure and death.

Plex for Android gets updated, adds remote control features for ease of use

Although I'm sure many folks are waiting to see what XBMC on Android will fully offer, there is some pretty good options that already exist in the Google Play Store for streaming content around. One I like to use is Plex and a few days ago, it got a nice healthy update that brought one of the most requested features to Android as well as quite a few bug fixes:

• Android devices can now be remote controlled.
• Network logging for troubleshooting
• Media Info displayed at top of screen when playback controls are visible.
• Experimental Transcode method (Quicksilver)
• FIX an issue where sometimes Plex would get stuck on 'Loading'
• FIX playback issues on some ICS devices (e.g. HTC One)
• FIX an issue where hints in setup screens were not appearing on some devices
• FIX weird seekbar skipping behavior

The remote control feature is of course, what I was referring to feature wise as it allows you to control various Android devices running Plex from another Android device. Now, I can sit with a tablet connected to the TV and control it with my phone which, makes for a great experience overall.

The other big change in the app comes by way of Quicksilver transcoding. It's a new experimental encoding method that Plex is trying out that is specifically tuned for Kindle Fire users to offer better streaming to those devices. As it stands, it's not enabled by default so if you're a Kindle Fire user, you'll need to enable it in the settings. The update is live now, and available for purchase in the Google Play Store.
