Keep These Tips Handy As You Begin Your Home Improvement ...

TIP! Even a novice at home improvements can fix a leaky faucet. When you can deal with the issue quickly, you?ll save on your water bill.

Have you tried and succeeded at home improvement before? Have you had a lot of success with fixing up your home in the past? Try reading these tips to increase your knowledge.

TIP! Build an inventory of common hardware like screws, nails and fasteners. If you do this, you won?t have to search for what you need when you are trying to complete a project, fix something or hang those family photos.

Put in a backer board of cement when installing tile anywhere there is moisture. The cement will block the moisture, preventing it from damaging the drywall. When water interacts with the dry wall, damaging mold and mildew can form on the wall.

TIP! Thinking of home improvement as a money sink is a narrow view. In reality, you?re spending money now to save money later.

Take care to confirm that your contractor has listened to your instructions. It is much easier to voice your concerns or see your vision put into play when you have a contractor whom you consider trustworthy. An inattentive contractor may not complete the job as you intended. So do whatever you need to do so that the contractor actually ?hears? what you are asking for.

TIP! Be sure to include a window or other ventilation mechanism with any improvements to your bathroom. Humidity can cause a lot of damage to a bathroom.

Make sure any contractor you deal with is licensed by your state. You c an find out via your state government site or phone. An unlicensed contractor may have issues that prevent them from having a current license.

TIP! Work on painting the room before you make any other improvements. It is a lot easier to paint before the floor is installed.

A fun home improvement project is to add a bar to a basement space. The task of designing, building and drinking at a bar is a project that everyone will enjoy doing. Whatever way someone chooses to do it, creating a bar can be a great improvement.

TIP! After seven years, it may be in your best interest to upgrade or replace your central heating and air unit. Newer models are all made to higher standards, which means they use far less electricity in order to operate.

Remember that you can never eyeball angles, measurements, or leveling to guess at them when woodworking. Essential tools for good woodworking results are your speed square, level, and tape measure.

TIP! When it comes to home improvement, don?t go it alone! Some projects can be undertaken with help from the entire family?even young children. For example, some simple painting, planting a garden, hanging artwork, etc, are all home improvement projects that you can complete as a family.

Don?t allow contractors to stain your budget by telling you that they?ll have the job done unusually quick. A contractor might have reasons to want to do the job quickly. They probably want to rush the jobs to spend time on other jobs. But this can be harmful to your budget if they try to charge for overtime work.

TIP! If you are needing a new roof, consider using white tile or shingles to replace the old roof. Using dark colored tile can cause an attic to become hot.

Gaining knowledge of home improvement takes time no matter how good you are at handy projects. There is always more to learn, whether it is new tricks or building skills. You are sure to find many great ways to use the above advice.

What?s next for Anthony Pettis? Waiting patiently for the lightweight title shot

With his performance against Donald Cerrone on Saturday night, Anthony Pettis made a believer out of many fight fans. One of those who now thinks Pettis belongs in the title shot conversation is UFC president Dana White.

While the next bout for UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson is set with Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez in April, Pettis has set himself up as the obvious next man up.

"I think the Melendez fight is pretty set, but (Pettis is) next. I can't say enough things about the kid tonight. That was incredible," White said in the postfight press conference.

The last time Pettis had a title shot, he had a wrench thrown into the plans. Pettis won the WEC lightweight belt in the promotion's final fight. A title shot was promised to whoever had the belt when the WEC merged with the UFC.

But two weeks after Pettis won the belt, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard faced off for the belt. They fought to a draw and Edgar kept the belt, but Maynard was given an immediate rematch.

Instead of waiting for the title shot then, Pettis fought Clay Guida. He lost a decision, and the title shot was gone. This time, he's not going to let the title shot slip through his hands.

"If it's a guaranteed title shot, then I'm waiting. That was my goal this year, and I'm definitely going to wait and get better," Pettis said.

The way title shots have been going in the UFC, there's no way to know if Pettis is making the right call. However, what Pettis is doing is setting himself up as the go-to guy if the UFC needs him. Melendez has had to postpone fights because of injuries in the past, and you never know what could happen as fighters prepare for their bouts.

Alternate Organization of K-12: Part One ? Scope - Reanimating ...

The purpose of this first blog in a series is to propose that the present US model of a public school has hardened into a stereotype.? That model seems based on the assumptions that a K-12 school system is somehow unique, unaffected by organization theory, developments in research on human behavior irrelevant, and the only way present K-12 learning can be structured.

Paradoxically, that homogeneity of public K-12 systems contradicts the mantra of local control invoked by most public education defenders.? The specific strategic and operating environments of any organization are not usually subject to manipulation to accommodate an extant organization, though in monopolies that anti-social attempt may be made. ?Normatively, the organization is structured to deal with its environments.

This follows as well from the observation that public education in general, including its collegiate schools, has too frequently isolated itself intellectually from the basic disciplines that actually foot its practice.? Causes may be defensiveness, ignorance, fear, or just the sociology of protected, strongly associative reference group behavior augmented by the teachers? unions?? An answer would help understanding, but reality is that whatever drives present beliefs has cemented in place an over one hundred year-old model for formal organization and for envisioning critical public K-12 learning.

Subsequent posts will propose alternative K-12 models, and their implications for management of the resources powering present public primary and secondary education.

It is not absolute that the present grade, curricular structure, management arrangements, or other systems structure generally employed or present in public K-12 are wrong or automatically demand radical change.? What is assumed is that there has been far too little work executed to test the logic of present K-12 public organization.? Indeed, in the literature search for this post, fewer than 10 percent of the references viewed ? chosen from work in this century because of some reference to alternate K-12 structures ? actually explored that question.? There were five times as many references to the organization or critique of online learning.

The key suggested rule for this journey is central to creativity in any venue:? The need to temporarily suspend disbelief in options to truly scope the issues.? Detailing, critique, challenge, spotting logical holes, all come in due course to assess thinking out of the box.? But not enabling initial openness for options, simply chases any exercise back to what is already in place, creativity?s automatic disruptor.? This was illustrated this weekend by the musings of an otherwise competent, nationally recognized educator, Larry Cuban, in a post to ?The Answer Sheet,? creating a straw man to critique in the current evolution of MOOC (massive online open-source courses), versus reflecting how that innovation might in some form interact with, and nudge K-12 process.? This may be a challenge in our present US knee-jerk society, so sharpen the knives for critique, but keep them sheathed until the options are on the table.

Conventional wisdom would suggest that this journey?s topics are primarily grade span and the titles on the blocks of a school organization chart.? But conventional isn?t the melody for this song.

Organization of any human activity in both the private and public sectors in this century is either a replication of past patterns, or evolution of a past formulation, or by design, or simply occurs in an unplanned trajectory.? The latter is not as uncommon as one might believe.? Many 21st century start-ups just happen, without deliberate specification of a model for creating work, and a preconception of needed change to accommodate growth; they wind up requiring painful realignment with growth, or the lack of resilience of the start-up model drags the firm down.

Public K-12 education, not pejorative but pragmatically, has overall both ignored modern organization theory and demonstrated little awareness that, though their ?numbers? as a system have not experienced dramatic shifts, the environments for their functions and for the product they were created to nurture have dramatically changed.

For perspective, the nation?s children entering K-12 in 2013 will (at least a fraction) exit secondary education in 2025, postsecondary education and the job market by 2030.?

A data point is the sum of outputs from The World Economic Forum, meeting this past week in Davos, Switzerland.? Whether one applauds or scorns our industrial largest and most influential, their beliefs and choices will power most of our economy into the future.? Their views:? ?Climate change?will cause tremendous economic upheaval;?? ?water is the new oil;? ?one of the great concerns should be the employment effects of technology, with so many jobs being rendered obsolete by scientific or technological advances;? new technologies for analyzing the brain will change how we learn.? Pointing up the education challenge was former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown:

?

??huge advances in the Internet and technology are enabling young people to connect with each other and this is opening up the world in a way that has never happened before.? ?Young people are beginning to see that the gap between the opportunities and rights they have been promised and the opportunities and rights that are delivered to them is wholly unacceptable. And the sense that they are being deprived of these opportunities and rights is, I think, going to be the big motivating force over the next few years.?

Our scientific, technology, and even business literature now regularly assert that the knowledge and economic world, as we presently know it, won?t be a smooth extrapolation of the present.? Should it be business as usual for K-12 public education, and how it has been organized and strategized?

?

In the absence of public K-12 reinvention, a new word may be needed to describe its relevance by 2025-2030.? The calls for change in K-12 education, as perverse and ignorant as the present reform movement has been in creating the challenge, should not be a mystery.? Based on the trajectories of what today?s K-12 matriculating students will inherit by the time they are job-ready, some genuine reform is way overdue. There is a rich literature on organization theory and caveats for designing organizations.? Still, few students of the genre think in those terms, rather, using the principles and models of organization to try to explain behavior within an existing organization, or internally adjust one?s parameters to improve its outputs, or assess participant satisfaction, or its learning, or explain why one is not performing as anticipated.? But the notion of actually designing a system to do work is neither new nor does it require new tools. What it does require is a very high tolerance for inputs.? Once past the fiction that an organization is effectively described by, for example, the typical organization chart, the building material explodes.? The variables effecting an organization?s specifications are complex and layered, subject to both the internal missions of the firm and its actors, and equivalently effected by all of the exogenous factors that portray an organization?s environment, present and projectable.? The following figure tries to portray at least the chapter titles of the factors influencing an organization?s survival properties in its venue:
Most of the factors are self-explanatory though subject to major contents expansion.? The figure is color coded to try to portray the different classes of factors:? The largest frame of society and national strategy; subsidiarity, a term recently employed by California?s Governor Jerry Brown to indicate the functions that can be appropriately dedicated to the Federal or states? governments; learning variables, where DOUPP refers to knowledge ? defining, organizing, updating, prescribing, and protocols for dissemination; factors potentially controllable by a system; and the local environments that face a system.

Isn?t this unnecessarily complicating the issue of K-12 mission delivery?? Unquestionably it explodes the determinants, but when digested and hardened, the factors that impact a local system could be many of the above, but are more likely selectively and variably material to the local system.? The factors sorted can be reduced for a system based on their specific materiality.

How might the actual process of organization design work?? Again, at a conceptual level, one perspective is displayed in the diagram below.? Key assumptions of the mission, and deployment and management of resources come from recognizing the school?s major environments.? More finely tuned ?goal criteria for organization design? were detailed in the last post.? ?Organizational process? considerations were also detailed in the last post.? The triangulation of the three inputs produces something not magic, but likely some alternative forms a system might take to best reflect its environment, using the practical dimensions of what the organization is and does.
At the risk of repetition, isn?t this unnecessarily complicated?? Why change what more or less works?? Why chase scarce human resources, with time constraints through this complex process??

Multiple answers.? The process stimulates recognition of variables that impact learning goals and subsequent performance.? It would necessitate that those who manage the massive resources America devotes to public education, actually question their own beliefs and assumptions, a reality check.? It kicks those managing the system out of their comfort zones.? And it is a discovery path for alternative and more creative or productive ways to achieve learning goals consistent with a rapidly changing environment, and to use the scarce resources invested.

Where the Rubber Meets the Road

Readers with a conscientious distaste for theory and conceptualization may not find the above very satisfying, perhaps impractical, perhaps spacey??

In fact, as a long time consultant dealing with corporate strategic planning, teaching it at a high level, and doing it in my own firms managed, the process works.? Per force, the models that one can employ at a grass roots level need to be shaped and polished to work in the real organizational environments.? This post simply introduces the sweep of issues that might impact reformulating K-12 efforts.? The next several posts will seek to bore in on how some of the historically highest impact factors might fit retooling of public K-12 schools? organization.

Further, little reinvention of educational wisdom is necessarily involved, excepting the ramping discovery of better explanations for how learning works, from the neural biological and neural net simulation work underway.? In the course of research for the series, a powerhouse of existing principles for improving K-12 learning could be found.? The unifying attribute of much of that work; it did not originate in our schools of education, or in the material most frequently cited as the bases for present K-12 pedagogy.

Lastly, an example to set up the next post and demonstrate that the kind of probing above has merit.? It is likely that the closest things to widely attempted (but difficult because of uncontrolled variables) experiments to specify K-12 organization change have been the studies of grade span.? They are everywhere, even in the last century, and proliferated in this one until NCLB took hold and dominated priorities.? In the literature review for this post, one finally quit counting those studies typically executed at a system level.?

But the research results have been anything but consistent, though generally favoring a K-8/9-12 stratification over the various middle-school options.? The lack of some definitive answer has been almost universally attributed by study authors to the lack of sophisticated statistical tools that can account for concomitant and intervening variables in creating performance differences from alternate transitions.

Another point of view, the wrong question was emphasized.? The most robust finding from this population of studies has been that student performance is primarily impacted by the transitions introduced by grade span elections. Studies show transition effects appear to dissipate within roughly a year, but seemingly never asked, what specifically are the behavioral causes and effects on students from the transition(s), and precisely how do they impact current learning?? For as long as there are grades, without some functional mechanism to mitigate the losses of learning performance traceable to any transition, the child will see not just the grade span effect, but a dozen transitions. ?

One cogent explanation resides in the socialization between student and teacher that must be rebuilt at each transition;?cumulative effects of transitions might also be expected to peak for students where learning is?challenged by socioeconomic and cultural status that impedes socialization adjustments. ?Another explanation is the effect on present capacities for teacher recognition and use of prior learning, a factor that has been repeatedly empirically demonstrated to greatly influence present learning.

Viewed from the above perspectives, there may be organizational fixes for the problem; one that incorporates a longitudinal strategy will be advanced next post.

And oft-used quote, but one that never ceases to challenge how we measure accountability for K-12 by something with greater validity than a state?s school grades based on standardized tests.? By Irish poet, William Butler Yeats:? ?Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.? ?Designing public K-12 for that destination should be the mission. ?Part two will dig deeper to suggest how real world school organization can still be adjusted to improve the learning that will be needed in our futures.

Facebook Quietly Tightens Its PayPal Payout Policy, Now Requires Extra ID In Countries Like China, Brazil, India, And Israel

facebook-money-360As Facebook continues to build out the App Center and its overall business as a platform for third parties, it's also tightening up how payment policies work within it. In one of its latest moves, the company has changed how it pays out to PayPal accounts for new (not existing) developers who select that option. Specifically, Facebook now requires extra levels of authentication for new developers from certain countries, including large emerging markets like China, India, and Brazil but also some mature countries such as Australia, Japan and Norway.

Get a great deal on your meeting space - Business Management Daily

meeting venueIf you want to get the most for your money when booking meeting or event space, you need to negotiate, says Anthony Coyle-Dowling, director of sales with Zibrant. Don?t just accept the price you?ve always paid for the place you usually use or take the first price you?re quoted at a new location.

  • Start with research. Review your spending and usage patterns for places you?ve booked in the past. Then identify mistakes that may have cost you money and build a list of preferred suppliers with prearranged rates, terms and conditions.
  • Establish priorities. Think about how your space needs will change in the coming year and consider how those changes will affect your requirements for locations, room sizes, Wi-Fi, parking and quality of venues.
  • Consider a variety of locations. Don?t dismiss properties you?ve rejected in the past. Be aware they are frequently updated and keen to attract new business. New venues may also be eager to establish a client base.
  • Think of ways to save. Venues value volume, so if you can do a variety of events at one location you?ll get a better price. If you can get a good deal that fits your needs, you can benefit in other ways from establishing an ongoing relationship.
  • Add accommodations. Taking a block of rooms in addition to meeting space can add additional savings.
  • Mention added-value items. These include Wi-Fi, parking, food and drink.
  • Look at cancellation contingencies. You want to secure good cancellation terms from the start.
  • Discuss AV and other equipment. These can add a lot to your bill, so take them into account in negotiations.
  • Think about your full spend. Don?t just try to get the best rate on bits and pieces of your booking, think about the package as a whole.
  • Go back and forth with offers. Be fair, but go back and forth to get the best deal you can negotiate. Don?t be afraid to go back after the deal is set if you get an offer of better terms elsewhere.

Luxury homes in Japan with Sotheby's International Realty ? Real ...

The name Sotheby?s is well known as an auction house that dates back 270 years, but many people may not be aware that it is also a high-end real estate brokerage company. Established in 1976, Sotheby?s International Realty began by offering its auction clientele real estate services. It currently has over 600 offices located in 45 countries and territories, giving clients unprecedented access to properties that span the globe.

In 2010, Sotheby?s International Realty opened its Tokyo office in order to make a full-scale entry into the rapidly expanding Asian market. Its 15-strong team provides a full range of real estate services in Japanese, English, and Chinese.

Japan Today meets with Chief Operating Officer Yutaka Takeda at the company?s new office in Hiroo Plaza to hear more about the business.

What is your background?

I was actually born in Hiroo, not too far from this office. I went to Seikei University?the same university as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. His elder brother was my classmate. My major was economics. After graduating, I worked for JAL for 30 years, in sales, marketing, as well as the group?s hotel and resort business. I joined Sotheby?s in June 2010.

What is Sotheby?s International Realty?s history?

Many clients of the auction house are interested in high-end real estate, so Sotheby?s International Realty was founded in New York in 1976 to look after their needs. At first, the focus was mainly in Europe and the United States. In the 2000s, the company started pushing expansion in Asia and as a result, branches opened in Hong Kong and Japan three years ago, and Taiwan opened last year.

We have a very strong alliance with the auction house and one of our strengths is our reputable brand name and access to the world?s wealthy individuals. While some clients are auction clients, we do have our own client base, as well.

How were the last two years?

2011 was a very difficult year because of the earthquake and fear of radiation. Inbound business dropped off. However, after the March 11 disaster, some Japanese felt, probably for the first time in their life, that maybe they need a place to escape to if there is another disaster. That fuelled demand for real estate overseas. As a result, we saw good growth in the latter half of 2012.

Where are your Japanese clients looking to buy?

Hawaii is definitely No. 1. Singapore is very popular, also. For high-end Japanese clients, Europe is in demand ? Monaco, Switzerland, Paris. There is also interest in the Gold Coast in Australia and New Zealand. Our sales outside of Japan are heavily connected to whether there are direct flights to those destinations from Japan. But even if there isn?t a direct flight, our strength is our international network ? 600 offices in 45 countries. So we can help you with your real estate needs very quickly.

Who are your typical Japanese clients?

All ages, really, ranging from retirees to people in their 30s. Many of our clients buy real estate overseas for investment or they might go to stay there once or twice a year. Time share is a very big market for Japan. I would say that there are nearly 40,000 Japanese owners who have purchased Hilton and Marriot time-shares in Hawaii. That gives you some idea of how important a market Hawaii is.

What about your inbound business?

Many of our clients come from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore. There are some Americans or Europeans married to Japanese, who are interested in buying property in Tokyo. While the demand is mainly for Tokyo, we do receive some inquiries for residences in ski areas such as Hakone, Karuizawa and ski areas such as Hakuba and Niseko.

Where do you see growth potential?

We wish to boost our business of selling more to foreigners in Japan. That?s why we have recently moved to this new office in Hiroo. Many foreigners recognize the brand name and often drop in. Our office is open seven days a week and we want to be more in touch with the foreign community. We are like a concierge and our experienced staff speak Japanese, English and Chinese.

We have a close relationship with our clients. When they are in Tokyo, they often drop in and have lunch and talk about the market, real estate. I think that is one of our unique points.

How do you market the brand?

Our head office issues a publication called Reside twice a year. The auction house has a publication eight times a year and they have a real estate section. Hong Kong has a publication six times a year and does direct mail to 20,000 wealthy individuals. Japan?s properties are included in all those publications. Besides that, we have editorial tie-ups with a number of Japanese publications. We use YouTube and Facebook, as well as our website.

More proactively, we started holding Hawaiian real estate seminars in December 2011. It turned out to be a very big success and we have since held seminars in Osaka and Nagoya, usually once every six months. The last one, which was a collaboration with CNBC/Nikkei, drew 160 people. Most were serious clients.

How do you find properties?

We have a strong relationship with developers and construction companies, so we keep up to date on the market. We also have a team who specialize in looking for available properties. There is a saying in this business that many properties become available due to the 3 Ds ? death, divorce and debt.

What is a typical day for you?

I show up around 9 a.m. After tending to emails, we have meetings. I am more involved in cross-border transactions because I have good connections all over the world from my JAL days. I often have lunches and dinners with clients. That is an important part of the job. Sometimes I work on weekends, if I meet foreign visitors and show them properties.

The following is a guest post. Enjoy!

No one likes to be in debt, but?taking out personal loans from time to time?is often necessary, especially if the loan is for an investment ? e.g. to buy a first house, finance your education, or get a start-up business off the ground.??? There are well-documented problems that borrowers can encounter with high-interest loans, whether that is caused by poor financial management, or taking out a reasonable loan but not understanding the terms. Even if we are unable to pay a loan back as quickly as we had initially agreed, there is help available for borrowers to consolidate their debt and get out from underneath it. In certain states and counties, debtors who get behind on their payments can actually wind up in private prisons run by contractors, even though debtors? prisons have been mostly illegal in the USA since the Civil War. However, if you find yourself blessed with friends or family who have disposable cash to hand (and like you), there is a great temptation to take a loan from a personal acquaintance instead of a bank or lending institution. And, it makes sense: it's often quicker and easier, with less red tape and better terms (perhaps your friend or family member has even offered to let you pay back the loan interest-fee), and on a whole, it somehow feels less scary; no paper-work or intimidating payment reminders from the bank. But as they say, buyer beware. The danger with borrowing money from someone you know is that money can become a divisive issue; indeed, it is an issue that has been known to destroy relationships and ruin friendships. In fact, an overwhelming number of marital problems and divorces are down to money-related conflicts, which should serve as a strong caution to even the most amiable friend or relative who might offer you financial help. One major stumbling block with family loans is that people may not be honest with you ? i.e., the money may be more important to them than they initially indicate. The importance of recouping that money, and the lender?s expectations as to how quickly you'll pay them back, often goes unstated. Furthermore, you may take their generosity for granted and assume they'll 'let it slide' or that they'll understand if you can't make your repayments every month. It is easy to allow one month of non-payment turn into two months or four; sometimes, it turns into a year, with the hope or assumption that the loan has been forgiven. It is easy to imagine how this might fracture the relationship. An interesting?study was conducted by Carnegie Mellon University?? we have a tendency, especially in situations where we are borrowing money from a friend or family member, to confuse fairness with self-interest. So at the end of the day, which is more important to you: money or your relationships? How about you all? Would you be willing to give a loan to a family member or have you ever taken out one of these? If so, how did it work? Did it create any family stress? Did you have a written agreement?

Learn About Some Neat Website Hosting Tricks Here - Internet ...

TIPS! You should avoid registering your domain name through your host, in case they decide to keep it in the event you ever cancel your plan. This places the control of your domain in your hands, rather than your host?s.

Are you interested in sending emails on an automated basis to your clients? If you select a good website hosting service, this is possible. The tips that follow will help you choose a hosting plan that lets you do this and much more quickly and easily.

TIPS! When you are purchasing a web host?s services, make sure the method of payment is a reliable and safe one. Paypal and direct payment by major credit card give you layers of consumer protection that paying by check or money order may not provide.

Just because a web host company is free, does not mean you should rule it out entirely. Some free hosts will add their own banners to your site and make it look unprofessional; but search out those who do not. Free hosting could save a good chunk of money in hosting costs each year.

TIPS! Figure out the schedule your web host uses to do maintenance. Ideally, you want maintenance to occur once in a month or less.

When choosing a web host, make sure you find one that will quickly respond to your inquiries. Your host should always inform you of expected updates, maintenance and downtime. Make sure you have a way to stay in contact.

TIPS! Browse through web hosting directories. They list nearly all that is out there, enabling you to figure out which ones fit you best for price and features.

When deciding on a web host, choose a provider that tracks your traffic statistics for you. A good way to double-check the traffic numbers provided by your hosting service is to install a visitor counter on your landing page. Use this information to tweak the way that you reach out to the intended market for your business.

TIPS! Do you only have dial-up Internet service? Then don?t host your site. You?ll need a fast and reliable connection for hosting.

Some web hosting sites are free and can help you save money and cut costs, but these usually come with a catch. This usually means that they will put advertisements on your site, and you will have a limited amount of space to store your website. Free web hosts generally don?t work out if you want to host a business site. The ads and limited storage space can make the site appear unprofessional.

TIPS! Most of the applications and add-ons your host will offer will be useless to you, so don?t include them in your comparisons unless you have a concrete use for them already. You may see offers for unlimited storage, which can seem attractive, until you realize you have little data storage need.

Pay attention to the reputation of the companies you consider. Make sure you read all the articles you can about the web host to learn what kind of reputation they have and what services they will provide reliably. Others make promises they cannot deliver on, and should be avoided.

TIPS! If you are certain you will be using the same host for several years, try finding one that may give you a discount for years of continuous business. This could end up saving you a lot of money.

If you wish to experiment with new software, look for a plan with a VPS or virtual private server. VPS plans will let you have control over everything that has to do with your web site, this includes all of your software installations and deletions, it is like you have your own server. Before you sign up for a VPS plan, make sure you are familiar with all the aspects of server administration.

TIPS! Make a hard copy backup of your website data, whether your web host requires it or not. It is very important that you do this, not just for compliance, but mostly because you want to have your data backed up and safe.

Ultimately, your web host should be capable of supporting multiple programming languages, including current ones, and any that could be used in the future. It will be a hard task to start up your website, if you are trying to run it using a language that your hosting company doesn?t support. You should also keep in mind potential future languages you wish to use, otherwise you won?t be able to add them to your site. Switching web hosts can take a lot of work.

TIPS! Be wary of web hosts with a price that seems too good to be true. If you are tempted to choose a cheap host, find out why the price is so low.

Are you looking at free web hosts? One thing that many free web hosts do not provide is content backup. This means you?ll need to make your own arrangement for backing up your site. If you choose not to do this, a problem with the site could result in substantial data loss.

TIPS! You need to protect what you invest into your site by buying your domain name outright instead of registering it through your host. Even though this may be convenient for you, it can put your ownership of a domain name in jeopardy if something goes wrong for the host.

The first things you need to determine are disk space and bandwidth needs for your website. Both these factors will depend solely on the site you?ve designed. There are plenty of web hosting providers that can offer you unlimited bandwidth and file storage space. Failing to account for adequate capacity in these important functions will cause your website to load slowly and cost you customers.

TIPS! Make sure any web host you sign up with has multiple Internet links. With only a single connection, you run the risk that whenever it goes down, so does your website.

As you now have seen, these companies will offer different things, if you pick the right one you will get the most out of it. Use the tips above to find the right hosting company and get ready to take your online business to the next level.

Do common painkillers cause kidney failure in children?

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen, are commonly used to treat pain and reduce fever in children. However, the use of NSAIDs has been shown to cause acute kidney injury (AKI) in some children. A new study scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics reports the findings on the number of children diagnosed with AKI caused by NSAIDs in one hospital over an 11 ? year span.

Dr. Jason Misurac and colleagues from the Indiana University School of Medicine and Butler University retrospectively screened all patients hospitalized at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health who were identified with AKI. Out of 1015 patients with AKI, 27 were identified to have NSAID-associated AKI. Seventy-eight percent of the 27 patients had been using NSAIDs for less than 7 days, and 75% took the medication at the correct dosage. In 67% of the cases, the family reported that the child had signs of dehydration. Most of the patients were teens; however, patients who were less than 5 years old were more seriously affected and more likely to need dialysis. Although the reasons for younger children having a more severe disease course are unknown, the authors speculate that it could be due to an increased susceptibility to the toxic effects of NSAIDs. None of the patients died or developed permanent kidney failure, but 30% of the children had evidence of mild chronic kidney damage persisting after recovery from the episode of AKI.

The costs of caring for children with NSAID-associated AKI are significant, especially considering that this is an avoidable condition. Adding to this cost burden is the long-term care needed, because studies show that these patients have an increased risk of progressive chronic kidney disease. In some cases, acetaminophen might be a more appropriate choice for treatment. "This study underscores the importance of understanding the natural history of NSAID-associated AKI, including the potential for development of chronic kidney disease," notes Dr. Misurac. "Providers should continue to provide careful NSAID education to parents and children."

FDA Clears First Autonomous Telemedicine Robot for Hospitals

RP-VITA[TM], by iRobot and InTouch Health, enables doctors to provide patient care from anywhere in the world via a telemedicine solution

BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--iRobot Corp. (NASDAQ: IRBT), a leader in delivering robotic solutions, announced that the RP-VITA Remote Presence Robot has received 510(k) clearance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in hospitals. RP-VITA is the first autonomous navigation remote presence robot to receive FDA clearance.

"There are very few environments as difficult to maneuver as that of a busy ICU or emergency department. Having crossed this technology threshold, the potential for self-navigating robots in other markets, and for new applications, is virtually limitless."
RP-VITA is a joint effort between two industry leaders, iRobot and InTouch Health. The robot combines the latest in autonomous navigation and mobility technologies developed by iRobot with state-of-the-art telemedicine and electronic health record integration developed by InTouch Health. RP-VITA allows remote doctor-to-patient consults, ensuring that the physician is in the right place at the right time and has access to the necessary clinical information to take immediate action. The robot has unprecedented ease of use. It maps its own environment and uses an array of sophisticated sensors to autonomously move about a busy space without interfering with people or other objects. Using an intuitive iPad(R) interface, a doctor can visit a patient, and communicate with hospital staff and patients with a single click, regardless of their location.

The FDA clearance specifies that RP-VITA can be used for active patient monitoring in pre-operative, peri-operative and post-surgical settings, including cardiovascular, neurological, prenatal, psychological and critical care assessments and examinations.

RP-VITA is being sold into the healthcare market by InTouch Health as its new flagship remote presence device. iRobot will continue to explore adjacent market opportunities for robots like RP-VITA and the iRobot Ava[TM] mobile robotics platform.

"FDA clearance of a robot that can move safely and independently through a fast-paced, chaotic and demanding hospital environment is a significant technological milestone for the robotics and healthcare industries," said Colin Angle, chairman and CEO of iRobot. "There are very few environments as difficult to maneuver as that of a busy ICU or emergency department. Having crossed this technology threshold, the potential for self-navigating robots in other markets, and for new applications, is virtually limitless."

"Remote presence solutions have proven their worth in the medical arena for quite some time," said Yulun Wang, chairman and CEO of InTouch Health. "RP-VITA has undergone stringent testing, and we are confident that the robot's ease of use and unique set of capabilities will enable new clinical applications and uses."

Low vitamin D levels linked to high risk of premenopausal breast cancer

Jan. 24, 2013 ? A prospective study led by researchers from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine has found that low serum vitamin D levels in the months preceding diagnosis may predict a high risk of premenopausal breast cancer.

The study of blood levels of 1,200 healthy women found that women whose serum vitamin D level was low during the three-month period just before diagnosis had approximately three times the risk of breast cancer as women in the highest vitamin D group. The study is currently published online in advance of the print edition of the journal Cancer Causes and Control.

Several previous studies have shown that low serum levels of vitamin D are associated with a higher risk of premenopausal breast cancer. "While the mechanisms by which vitamin D could prevent breast cancer are not fully understood, this study suggests that the association with low vitamin D in the blood is strongest late in the development of the cancer, "said principal investigator Cedric Garland, DrPH, FACE, professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at UC San Diego.

Analyses of vitamin D levels measured more than 90 days before diagnosis have not conclusively established a relationship between serum levels and risk of premenopausal breast cancer in the present cohort. However, this new study points to the possibility of a relevant window of time for cancer prevention in the last three months preceding tumor diagnosis -a time physiologically critical to the growth of the tumor.

According to Garland, this is likely to be the point at which the tumor may be most actively recruiting blood vessels required for tumor growth. "Based on these data, further investigation of the role of vitamin D in reducing incidence of premenopausal breast cancer, particularly during the late phases of its development, is warranted," he said.

The new study drew upon 9 million blood serum specimens frozen by the Department of Defense Serum Repository for routine disease surveillance. The researchers thawed and analyzed pre-diagnostic samples of serum from 1,200 women whose blood was drawn in the same time frame -- samples from 600 women who later developed breast cancer, and from 600 women who remained healthy.

A 2011 meta-analysis by Garland and colleagues estimated that a serum level of 50 ng/ml is associated with 50 percent lower risk of breast cancer. While there are some variations in absorption, those who consume 4000 IU per day of vitamin D from food or a supplement normally would reach a serum level of 50 ng/ml.

Garland added that a consensus of all available data has shown no known risk associated with this concentration of vitamin D, which is measured as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D. But he urges patients to ask their health care provider to measure their serum 25(OH)D before substantially increasing vitamin D intake.

"Reliance should not be placed on different forms of vitamin D, such as vitamin D2, and megadoses should be avoided except those ordered by a doctor for short-term use," Garland added.

In crisis, Greeks turn to wood-burning _ and choke

(AP) ? Fireplaces were long a status symbol for Greece's up-and-coming middle class, like the second car and the flat-screen TV. Now, they are increasingly their owners' only defense against the encroaching winter cold.

A steep increase in heating costs has led many Greeks to switch from heating oil to wood-burning. But the price of using cheaper fuel is growing.

Illegal loggers are slashing through forests already devastated by years of summer wildfires. Air pollution from wood smoke is choking the country's main cities. And there has been an increase in blazes caused by carelessly attended woodstoves.

Three children died in a northern village last month when a fire gutted the home of their grandparents, who had recently changed from oil-fueled central heating to a wooden stove to save money.

In Athens, the capital, officials have warned of severe health risks from the low-lying smog that smothers the city at night, when fireplaces and woodstoves burn at full blast in poorly insulated homes. Greece's leading medical association is demanding urgent action to clean the air. But those warnings have largely been ignored for a simple reason: Burning wood provides the same warmth as heating oil, for roughly half the cost.

For the past three years, the country has been wracked by its worst financial crisis since the end of World War II. Living standards have plummeted, pensions have been slashed and a quarter of the workforce is unemployed, following deeply resented cutbacks demanded in return for international bailouts shielding Greece from total ruin.

The heating crisis was triggered by taxation changes, and made desperate by financial woes. For years, fuel for vehicles was taxed more heavily than heating oil. That encouraged crooked traders to sell heating fuel for use in vehicles and pocket the difference.

Hoping to boost faltering revenues and foil tax fraud, the government this year harmonized taxes on vehicle fuel and heating oil, which now costs about 40 percent more than last winter, although lower-income residents of colder areas get a rebate. Critics say the move backfired due to a drastic decline in sales.

"The fact that the price of petrol has greatly increased, while incomes are shrinking to an unbearable extent, creates a vast problem with heating in Greece," said lawmaker Thomas Psyrras from the Democratic Left party ? a junior partner in Greece's conservative-led coalition government. "People who live abroad imagine that we have sunshine all year round, but that's not the case."

Temperatures have dropped below freezing in much of the country this winter, while snow fell in central Athens this month.

Stratos Paradias, head of the Hellenic Property Federation that represents property owners, says many city dwellers have been left without any central heating. "There are some who are completely unable to pay the costs due to the crisis," he said.

But even those who can afford oil, or the slightly cheaper natural gas, can be left shivering, due to the communal nature of each apartment block's central heating. It means that if enough owners want to go without, their decision is binding for all residents.

While electric heating is another option, most consumers perceive wood as cheaper ? especially since household power bills are set to increase about 10 percent this year.

It's hard to estimate how many people have abandoned heating oil for wood. Distributors say sales of heating oil are nearly 80 percent down this winter, and new firewood yards have mushroomed all over Athens.

"I used to have the only shop with firewood around here. Now another four have opened this year," said Grigoris Athanassakis, who has sold firewood for the past 15 years in the Athens district of Tavros.

"What's unprecedented this year is that we started selling firewood in August," he said. "People were terrified at the coming rise in fuel prices, and rushed to get their supplies in early."

Costas Tsakoyiannis, who runs a yard on a busy highway near a central cemetery, says he's seen a 20 percent rise in demand this season.

"It used to be middle-class people who bought firewood, but now it's much more widespread," he said. "Many who only had fireplaces in their flats for decoration now use them for heating. Others have bought woodstoves."

The heating crisis has spawned some ingenious solutions, such as stoves in northern Greece that burn fuel as unlikely as peach stones and olive pits.

Officials say all the wood smoke poses a considerable public health risk. The state Center for Disease Control & Prevention warned that a single fireplace emits 30 times more dust particles than oil-burning central heating for 25 flats.

The problem gets much worse when instead of firewood people burn salvaged wood or broken-up furniture that contains noxious varnishes or synthetic coatings.

A University of Thessaloniki study found that the concentration of fine particles in the air of the country's second-largest city was on average twice the safety level from mid-November to mid-December 2012 ? and considerably higher than a year earlier. Fine dust is particularly dangerous as it seeps deep into the lungs, potentially causing respiratory problems.

The Thessaloniki study estimated that the increase in pollution would lead to an extra ?40 million ($52 million) burden in public health costs.

In Athens, the crisis had initially helped to improve air quality as high gasoline costs discouraged the use of private transport. That changed this winter, as people rushed to buy firewood ? and the immediate outlook is bleak.

"We expect that as temperatures go down in January and February use of fireplaces will increase and the phenomenon will rise," said Evangelos Gerassopoulos, research director at the National Observatory.

The Environment Ministry said this month that while the smog "creates a serious problem for public health ... at this point the situation is not so acute as to allow taking emergency measures."

The Athens Medical Association, however, responded with an urgent appeal for action.

"We can't wait any longer," it said in a statement. "We have enough cancers in our country. The cost of treating people sickened from the effects of the smog will be much greater than that of (fully) subsidizing natural gas and heating oil."

The government has ruled out an expansion of the current heating oil rebate system. Meanwhile, the vast appetite for wood has encouraged extensive illegal logging ? by local residents for private use but also by organized gangs. Reports of clandestinely felled trees have come in even from the suburbs of Athens and a town park in central Greece.

Forestry services, hit so severely by cutbacks that they sometimes lack enough gasoline for car patrols, face the daunting task of policing some 6.4 million hectares (16 million acres) of forest.

Georgios Amorgianniotis, a secretary for forests at the environment ministry, said illegal logging only became a serious problem during the crisis.

He said legal actions against clandestine loggers doubled in 2012 compared to the year before, although that's partly due to stricter policing. In the area of Mount Olympus, mythical home of the ancient Greek gods, 300 people were arrested last year for illegal logging ? a five-fold increase from before the 2009 eruption of Greece's crisis.

In 2011, officials confiscated more than 6,500 tons of illegally cut firewood. That number doubled last year to 13,100 tons while more than 400 vehicles were impounded.

Forestry workers have even been attacked by illegal loggers wielding axes or guns.

After a shooting incident last year, a foresters' union weighed in with this judgment: "It's clearly turning into a Far West-style situation."
