September 2012 marks the four year anniversary of the founding or ?start? of PMD Sales Training & Consulting.?? Back in September, 2008 the stock market was in its? downward spiral.? The tanking of the economy resulted in quizzical looks from friends and associates to my proclamation of creating a start-up.? ?You?re going to do what?? they said. ?Business magazine articles at the time announced anyone ?crazy? for starting ? of all things ? a consulting business.??? After all, except in very special cases ?CONSULTING? was the first expense item off the P&L (and still is!), and to sell into any organization with consulting services was a long shot at best.?
But as any true business development professional knows, not much happens if you don?t make it happen.?? Those first few (okay, many) days back in 2008 ? after 25 years in the cocoon of the corporate world ? I stared at my $19.99 white desk phone ? waiting for it to ring.?
Of course, it didn?t.
I needed to pick up the phone and make something happen.??? The networking with friends and colleagues and telling my story and what I felt I could do for them about 50 times for each single sliver of an opportunity was what it was all about.?? And the challenge of making that first sale ? each early prospect seemingly close to engagement had a similar refrain ? ?But, no references??I?d be the first client?? only made thinner that sliver of opportunity.??
But with continued persistence, that first opportunity did materialize, and then the second, and third and so on. ??The euphoria of receiving that first check for ?services rendered? is a pinnacle moment in my business career.
Four years later, and 40 exciting engagements later, and close to $1 million in billings later ? (and hopefully 2-3 times that amount of value received by the clients we?ve worked with!)? there?s a sense of satisfaction of what?s been built from nothing.??
But that?s not the most satisfying part of the story.
The ultimate satisfaction comes from the relationships that have been formed ? relationships with business leaders, entrepreneurs, sales executives and of course all the salespeople in the trenches we?re had the opportunity to work with who make all those positions possible in the first place.? I appreciate their comments of thanks to PMD for how we have helped them ? whether that?s in a major way from how they plan and execute their profession, to the smallest element of being an active listener during the selling process.
So, in this month of celebration thanks to all that have been part of what?s grown here.?? Who knows what the future holds, but thus far it?s been one heck-of-an experience!
